Ukraine’s New Air Force Emerges
Ukraine is quietly rebuilding its air force for the future. In 2025, nearly 100 new pilot cadets completed intensive training, marking a major milestone in the nation’s ongoing defense modernization effort. The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine confirmed this achievement on 2 January, highlighting the country’s determination to restore and expand its air combat capability after years of sustained conflict.
The training program was conducted jointly with international partners and Ukrainian military academies. This collaboration forms part of Kyiv’s broader effort to strengthen its airpower and prepare for the introduction of Western aircraft, including F-16s and other advanced fighter jets.
Aviation Coalition Partnerships
Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence said the training aligned with agreements within the Aviation Coalition, a multinational initiative supporting the transfer and integration of Western aviation assets. The coalition aims to ensure that Ukrainian pilots, engineers, and air crews can operate seamlessly under NATO interoperability standards.
By 2025, several pilot groups had completed training on modern foreign-built combat aircraft, designed specifically to match real-world battlefield conditions in Ukraine. These programs are tailored to meet operational demands while improving coordination with allied air forces.

Integrating Western Fighters

Meanwhile, reports suggest Poland and Ukraine are discussing a transfer of Warsaw’s remaining MiG-29 fighters. If they agree, the MiG-29s could help cover the gap until more advanced aircraft arrive.
