Majid AD-08 in Armenia: Iran’s Silent SHORAD
Iran’s Majid AD-08 has shown up in Armenia at a sensitive time. Some reports say that Yerevan’s Republic Day parade rehearsals before the May 28 celebrations included Iranian short-range air defense vehicles. If the report is true, then Armenia will be the country to use this system. This makes a national event significant in the region, just a normal military show. For Tehran, selling this system shows they trust their domestic technology even with all the sanctions. For Yerevan, it adds a mobile layer to their air defense system. This system still needs to recover from the losses in Nagorno-Karabakh. So this sale is important because it connects technology, military lessons, and politics.
Why the Transfer is Important
The system is really different from missile shields, and that is why it is important. Majid AD-08 is used for range air defense it protects us from drones, helicopters, cruise missiles, and low-flying aircraft. The way it finds its targets without sending out signals is also helpful because it does not give away its location.
On the battlefield today, radars that are easy to find get attacked. This happens when special weapons that can stay in the air for a time, anti-radar missiles, and spy tools work together. So systems, like Majid AD-08 that are small and can move around without being seen can last longer. They are safer when people use tricks like hiding them using targets and moving them to different places.
Armenia’s Procurement Shift
Armenia has changed the way it buys things for its military since the war in 2020 and Azerbaijan taking over Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023. Now Armenia is looking at countries for help, not just Russia. Armenia is talking to India, France, China, and the United States. There are reports that Armenia has gotten some drones from China, like the CH-4 Rainbow. This development is important because Armenia needs to be able to protect itself from the air and from drones.
Armenia also needs to be able to see what is happening on the ground. The time there was a fight, Armenia had some problems with the situation. Armenia wants to buy things from countries that can deliver when Armenia needs them. That is why Armenia is in favour of buying from Iran. It is not a one-time thing; Armenia is trying to make its military stronger. Armenia is trying to rebuild its military with the help of Iran and other countries. As a country, Armenia needs its military to be strong, and it is working on that.

Passive Targeting Advantage
The Majid AD-08 has a cool feature, which is its passive imaging infrared seeker and electro-optical sensor package. This is different from systems that use radar because the Majid AD-08 does not need to send out a radar signal when it is looking for a target. This is good because it means the target will not know it is being targeted quickly and it will be harder for the enemy to stop the mission.
The imaging infrared guidance on the Majid AD-08 is also different from technology that just looks for heat. The Majid AD-08 builds a picture of the target using heat rather than just looking at the hot exhaust. This means it can resist some tactics that try to distract it, like flares, better than older missiles. However, how well the Majid AD-08 works still depends on how good the sensor is, the weather, how well the operator is trained, and how well everything is connected.
Iranian SHORAD Snapshot
The AD-08 missile is a missile that can stop other things from getting too close. It can work from about 700 meters to 8 kilometres away, and it can go from really low down, about 20 meters, to really high up, about 6 kilometres. The AD-08 missile is 2.67 meters long, it is about 156 mm around, and it weighs about 75 kg. The AD-08 missile can go fast, almost as fast as Mach 2.
The thing that launches the AD-08 missile uses cameras, and it can turn all the way around. It can also carry AD-08 missiles on a small vehicle. Some people who look at the details say it can see things from 15 km away and turn all the way around, which puts the AD-08 missile system with other short-range systems, not with the longer-range systems like the Khordad, the Arman, the Buk, or the S-300.
South Caucasus Balance
Majid AD-08 is going into a region where other countries already have partnerships. Azerbaijan works closely with Türkiye and Israel on defense. This makes Iran very concerned as it watches from its border. Armenia is a partner of Iran because it can help balance out Baku’s power without Iran having to send its troops.
We should not think this change is too big. A few short-range launchers will not be enough to change everything. They can help protect important places and make things harder for Azerbaijan. They can also make it difficult for drones or helicopters to fly low. The real importance of Majid AD-08 is how well Armenia can use it with systems, like radars and command networks.

Anti-Stealth Claims
Iranian stories often say that passive infrared systems are a way to stop stealth aircraft. This idea makes sense because stealth technology is about reducing the signals that radar picks up, not about hiding the heat that things give off. But there is no proof that the Majid AD-08 has actually hit an F-35 that is being used, so we need to be careful before we claim anything.
The message that Tehran is sending is important. They can tell people that passive systems are a choice because they are hard to detect and do not give off any signals. This might sound good to armies because hiding can be cheaper than building a big radar system.
Defense Analysis
The Majid AD-08 in Armenia is a big deal for Iranian defense exports and for improving the capabilities of Armenian forces. This system provides Armenia a way to defend itself from the air. It gives Iran a customer from another country. Now the South Caucasus region has a mix of defense systems from the Middle East, Eurasia, and Asia that are more visible than they were before.
For people who plan defense the main question is not if the Majid AD-08 system will change everything on its own. It will not. The main issue is if Armenia will build an air defense system around the Majid AD-08. This means having layers of defense being able to move the systems around, and having them all connected. If Armenia does this, the Iranian Majid AD-08 system could become an important part of a bigger change in the region.
