China's $5 billion defence Package for Pakistan includes KJ-500, J-35A, and HQ-19.
Pakistan has announced the signing of a $5 billion defense agreement with China, which includes the acquisition of KJ-500 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, 40 J-35A fifth-generation stealth fighter jets, and the HQ-19 missile defense system. The agreement highlights the two countries’ increased military cooperation in the face of changing regional security dynamics.

Advanced Military Assets Acquired
China’s Shaanxi Aircraft Corporation developed the KJ-500 AEW&C aircraft, a third-generation airborne early warning and control system. Built on the Y-9 airframe, it serves as a modern replacement for older AEW&C aircraft.
Equipped with three AESA radar arrays for 360-degree coverage, the aircraft enhances Pakistan’s aerial combat capabilities by facilitating long-range air-to-air missile operations.
The KJ-500, which has a detection range of about 470 kilometres against fighter-sized targets and 12-hour endurance, will significantly improve Pakistan’s air surveillance and battlefield coordination.
The HQ-19 missile defense system is a cutting-edge anti-ballistic missile (ABM) and anti-satellite (ASAT) system designed to intercept medium-range ballistic missiles. The HQ-19, like the US THAAD system, has a 3,000-kilometre operational range and a flight altitude of 200 kilometres.
It uses radar and infrared tracking, including the Type 610A radar, which can detect targets up to 4,000 kilometres away. It is expected to replace old air defense systems and significantly improve Pakistan’s ability to intercept long-range threats.
J-35A Capabilities
The J-35A stealth fighter jets represent a significant advance in Pakistan’s air capabilities. Shenyang Aircraft Corporation developed the J-35A, a twin-engine, single-seat multirole fighter with low radar observability, advanced avionics, and precision strike capabilities.
It features an Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) and a Diverterless Supersonic Inlet (DSI) for improved aerodynamics. China reportedly offered Pakistan a 50% discount on the deal, as well as lenient payment terms, solidifying their military alliance.
Pakistani pilots have already started training in China to fly the J-35A, ensuring a smooth transition to the Pakistan Air Force (PAF).

Delivery Timeline and Strategic Implications
Pakistan will receive its first batch of J-35A stealth fighters in the coming months, completing deliveries by early 2026. The KJ-500 AEW&C aircraft and the HQ-19 missile defense system will also arrive around the same time.
Conclusion
Experts predict a shift in regional power dynamics, with Pakistan preparing to strengthen its air combat and defense capabilities. The swift implementation of this agreement demonstrates China’s commitment to strengthening its defense ties with Pakistan and reinforcing its strategic alliances in the region.
In the coming years, we expect Pakistan’s deterrence and operational readiness to soar as it integrates these cutting-edge military assets.
